joined project between Billabong and Zalul
"Creating a Clean Sea" is a joined project between "Billabong Surf Clothing Company" and "Zalul Environmental Association", in order to raise awareness for the environment as a hole and specifically for the need to protect the seas and rivers of Israel from polluters. One of the main projects, for the past five years, call for the cleanup of Israel's beaches. This year, beach cleanups took place in Bat-Yam, Akko, Beit-Yanai, Nahariya, Ashdod and Ashkelon by hundreds of school children and volunteers which patrolled the beaches and collected tons of garbage and waste. Co-operations like these are of the utmost importance as they help raise the issue of environmental awareness amongst the public, in particular, surfers and beachgoers whom are most effected by sea pollution. Both associations want to encourage the public to act and make a difference, as they continue to lead the activities for a clean and clear Mediterranean Sea, and to reinforce the importance of environmental protection with the greater public
Zalul's mission:
Zalul Environmental Association is an environmental not-for-profit organization committed to protecting and maintaining clean, clear water along Israel’s rivers and shorelines. Founded in 1999 by a group of concerned citizens alarmed by the ongoing degeneration of Israel’s natural water resources and the lack of infrastructure and regulations to safeguard them, Zalul is comprised of a dedicated small team of professionals from various fields, devoted to protecting Israel’s natural heritage and to bring issues of environmental protection to the forefront of the public agenda. Today, Zalul is one of Israel’s leading environmental NGOs.
Tragedy on Mt. Carmel
Zalul bows its head as we mourn the deaths of the fire victims on Mount Carmel. The rehabilitation of the Carmel after this tragedy is of national importance and should be undertaken without delay. Zalul will work to rehabilitate the Carmel's streams and creeks which have fed the mountain's flora and fauna for generations.

Corona Save the Beach
Corona Save the Beach is an international initiative of Corona beer. In Israel, Corona and Zalul joined forces for Corona save the Beach aimed at raising public awareness to the importance of saving and preserving the Israeli beaches. You will be the ones to vote for the beach to be saved and put under surveillance in 2010 with the goal of increasing awareness to the importance of saving and preserving our beaches. One beach is a drop in the sea but millions of Israelis aware of the importance of caring for our beaches can bring a real change – an improvement in the condition of our beaches. For example, it takes 400-500 years for a plastic bag to be all gone in the sea – if we all avoid leaving plastic bags and garbage on the beach; we have already done a giant step towards saving our beaches. Our beaches strive for your help! Vote for the beach to be saved in 2010 and send us your proposals for beaches to be saved in the future! Join us as friend and influence! Come and join us in www.coronasavethebeach.org.il
Position Paper: Telma Factory Wastewater
Zalul calls on the management of Unilever and the Telma factory to immediately stop the flow of wastewater onto the Haifa beaches. Zalul calls on the Ministry of the Environment to immediately stop the flow of wastewater onto the beach, even if this requires the cancelation of the factory’s discharge permit. Our organization calls on the Municipality of Haifa to immediately cancel the business license of the Telma factory until the streaming of waste onto the city’s beaches ceases completely.
Zalul kicks off new campaign to fight the "Telma River"
Zalul kicked off our newest campaign in Haifa on Monday morning, August 9, 2010, with a gala ribboncutting ceremony. Our target: The 5 million cubic meters of waste water being dumped from the Telma factory in the Haifa Bay’s industrial zone into the sea every year.
Beach clean-ups and environmental tours with Zalul
If you are visiting Israel with a group or a mission, join us for two hours at the beach for a clean-up, or as we like to call it "tikkun hayam." Or spend a half or full day with Zalul biking and touring Israel's rivers and learning about the country's environmental history.
